I’m writing in reference to a story
by Izah Azahari, “Have a heart,
don’t let them stray”, published in
the Features section of the paper
on August 26.
It was quite heart-warming to
learn that there are compassion-
ate individuals who work tirelessly
to provide stray animals with food
and shelter.
The fact that these volunteers
also hold full-time jobs, they de-
serve more than just applause for
their commitment to the cause.
What stood out in the article,
however, was the part where a vol-
unteer explained that local shel-
ters don’t disclose their locations
for the fear that it would attract
people to dump unwanted animals
at their doorsteps.
I think there’s a severe lack of
understanding of what an animal
shelter is among these irrespon-
sible pet owners.
These shelters are there to
provide temporary home for stray
animals, not a place to discard un-
wanted pets.
If a person refuses to spay his
or her pets for whatever reason
and the number of pets multiply
at home, don’t count on the good-
will of people who work at animal
shelters to pick up his or her slack.
Keeping a pet is a commitment,
and to allow them to breed to the
point of having to resort to dump-
ing them like trash afterwards is be-
yond comprehension.
I believe more awareness needs
to be raised on what pet ownership
is. These animals are living crea-
tures that need food and shelter
just like us.
It’s disheartening that there are
people who would actually exploit
the compassion of these animal
shelter volunteers.

Animal shelters are not
dumpsters for unwanted pets
I recently saw a large SUV with
ive children in the rear seat and
none of them were wearing a
seat belt. It was obvious that their
parents were unaware of the risk
posed to their children.
It’s sad to see the lack of
awareness on the importance of
seat belt for rear seat passengers,
especially children.
In the event of an accident,
they could be violently thrown off
their seats, resulting in serious in-
juries.

Concrete slabs that line the street
near Selayun wholesale market
have been a hazard to motorists
that frequent the area.
Market vendors have seen
many cars being damaged by the
structures that are meant to be
used to as concrete footings for
street lighting.
I hope the authorities could
look into the matter as it’s a night-
mare for motorists in the area.
