MOSCOW (AP) — Russia yesterday became

the ‡irst country to of‡icially register a

coronavirus vaccine and declare it ready

for use, despite international skepticism.

President Vladimir Putin said that one of his

daughters has already been inoculated.

Putin emphasised that the vaccine

underwent the necessary tests and has

proven ef‡icient, offering a lasting immunity

from the coronavirus. However, scientists at

home and abroad have been sounding the

alarm that the rush to start using the vaccine

before Phase 3 trials — which normally last

for months and involve thousands of people

— could back‡ire.

Speaking at a government meeting

yesterday, Putin emphasised that the vaccine

has undergone proper testing and proven

safe to use. “I would like to repeat that it

passed the necessary tests,” he said. “The

most important thing is to ensure full safety

of using the vaccine and its ef‡iciency.”

The Russian leader added that one of his

two daughters received two shots of the

vaccine and is feeling well. “She has taken

part in the experiment,” he said. His daughter

had a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius on

the day of the ‡irst vaccine injection.

The issues of unemployment and manpower

development are constant challenges faced

by countries.

This was said by Minister at the Prime

Minister’s Of‡ice and Minister of Finance and

Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd

Amin Liew bin Abdullah yesterday.

“In Brunei Darussalam, we have been tack-

ling these issues for many years. As we have

seen so far in 2020, these issues have become

evenmore severe aswe confront newchalleng-

es brought about by the COVID“19 pandemic,”

he said.

“This calls for us to be more innovative in

our efforts to tackle unemployment and the

development of our manpower. We have also

seen how industry sectors are affected dif-

ferently. We therefore need to react to these

changes effectively and in a timely manner.”
