Those evacuated include nearly 150
coronavirus patients froma recently built
ield hospital in Mumbai, underscoring
the dificulties facing the city ahead of
the monsoon season as it struggles to
contain the pandemic.
A 45-year-old Alibag resident evacu-
ated fromhis home near the sea told AFP
he could see corrugated rooing lying
through the air as Nisarga’s powerful
winds struck.
“The intensity is very strong and
nothing like weather events we’ve seen
before,” said Milind Dhodre, a profes-
sor who lives in Alibag with his wife
and son.
The coastal town is a favoured haunt
of Bollywood stars and industrialists, who
own holiday homes there.
InMumbai, police announced fresh re-
strictions on the city of 18million people,
whichwas just beginning to emerge from
a months-long lockdown, and banned
gatherings of four people or more
until today.
“Refrain from venturing out to coast-
beaches, promenade, parks and other
similar places along the coastline,” the
police tweeted yesterday.
“Do not leave your house for your
own safety and well-being,” Maharash-
tra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray
tweeted on Tuesday, warning of possible
disruptions to the power supply due to
heavy rainfall.
“Ofices, industries and other ac-
tivities, which have started functioning,
will be shut tomorrow and day after,”
he added.
Slum-dwellers in low-lying ar-
eas of Mumbai were instructed to
move to higher ground, with city au-
thorities turning empty schools into
temporary shelters.
Inter-state railway services were
also disrupted with delays and di-
versions to ensure that trains would
not travel through Mumbai until the
cyclone passed.

MASERU, LESOTHO (AFP) - Leso-
tho’s former irst lady, Maesaiah
Thabane, returned to custody
yesterday after a court revoked
bail that she had been controver-
sially given over the murder of
her husband’s estranged wife.
The 43-year-old was charged
with murder in February after
police quizzed her on the brutal
killing of former Prime Minister
Thomas Thabane’s wife two days
before his inauguration.
She spent one night in jail
before a High Court freed her on
a USD57 bail.
But on Friday the country’s
Court of Appeal cancelled
that bail.
Police failed to re-arrest her
immediately because she was
out of country accompanying
her octogenarian husband, who
was seekingmedical attention in
neighbouring South Africa.
Yesterday she arrived at
the Magistrate’s court in Mas-
eru under the escort of armed
police oficers.
Magistrate Thamae Thamae
told her she would be taken to
the female correctional facil-
ity in fulilment of the Appeals
Court judgement.
“The decision of the High
Court to grant you bail has been
set aside by theCourt of Appeal,”
said the magistrate.
“You will remain in the cor-
rectional facility. You will report
back on June 16 to ind out the
progress of your case.”
Police oficers immediately
whisked her away.
She came to court sporting a
black-and-olive-green coloured
tracksuit, a knee-length winter
coat, sneakers and headscarf.
She donned an anti-coronavirus
mask to cover her face, but her
slumped posture suggested un-
happiness for someone known
for self-conidence.
Maesaiah Thabane is suspect-
ed of orchestrating the shooting
of Lipolelo Thabane, who was
gunned down outside her home
in the capital Maseru.
Police also charged her for
the attempted murder of Li-
polelo Thabane’s friend Thato
Sibolla, who was wounded at
the scene.
