KUBAR, PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES
(AFP) - Israel’s army yesterday demol-
ished the West Bank home of a Pales-
tinian charged with involvement in a
bomb attack that killed an Israeli teen-
ager, AFP journalists said.
The explosion last August 23 near
a spring close to Dolev in the West
Bank killed 17-year-old Rina Shnerb and
wounded her father and brother.
Four men were later arrested and
charged including Qassam Shibli, who
Israel said had made and planted the
explosive device.
His family appealed unsuccess-
fully against the planned home de-
molition before the Israeli Supreme
Court, arguing it amounted to collec-
tive punishment.
Israeli soldiers entered the village
of Kobar before dawn yesterday and
demolished Shibli’s second-loor home,
an AFP journalist at the scene said.
Clashes broke out, with young Pal-
estinians throwing stones at the sol-
diers, the journalist said.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said
one person, wounded in the head
by a tear gas canister, was taken to
hospital for treatment, while anoth-
er four were treated at the scene for
light injuries.
The homes of two other men con-
victed over the incident were demol-
ished in March.
Israel routinely demolishes the
homes of those accused of carrying
out attacks.
It argues that such measures act as
a deterrent, but critics say it amounts
to collective punishment.
Israeli Defence Minister Naftali Ben-
nett said in a statement they had “held
the terrorist to account” for the murder.
“House destruction is an important
tool in deterring terrorists,” he said.
SINGAPORE (CNA) - Singapore reported 486 new
COVID 19 cases as of noon yesterday, taking the
national total to 23,822.
The vast majority of the cases are work permit
holders residing in foreign worker dormitories,
said the Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MoH) in
its daily preliminary update.
Two cases are Singapore citizens or per-
manent residents.
“The lower number of cases today is partly
due to fewer tests being processed at a testing
laboratory as it is recalibrating its apparatus for
one of the test kits,” said MoH.
Singapore’s MoH announced on Sunday that
an “apparatus calibration issue” for one of the test
kits at a laboratory resulted in 33 “false positives”.
These 33 cases, including a healthcare work-
er at the Singapore Expo community care facil-
ity, previously tested positive for COVID 19.
“Subsequent retesting at the National Pub-
lic Health Laboratory conirmed that these were
negative cases,” said MoH, adding that it took
immediate action to rectify the situation.
“The laboratory has stopped all tests and is
working to resolve the calibration issue,” said
the ministry.
A total of 425 patients were also discharged
on Sunday, the highest number of discharged
cases seen in a day in Singapore since the out-
break of the COVID 19 pandemic.

KATHMANDU (AFP) - Nepal’s Foreign
Minister summoned India’s Ambassador
to Nepal yesterday over a new road be-
ing built through disputed territory as
police arrested protesters who burnt ef-
igies of the leaders of both countries.
Anger has been mounting since In-
dia last Friday inaugurated an 80-kilo-
metre road in Uttarakhand state lead-
ing up to the Lipu Lekh pass, high in
the Himalayas.
Scores of demonstrators deied a
coronavirus lockdown to burn efigies
of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi
and his Nepali counterpart, KP Sharma
Oli, at several protests in Kathmandu.
Protesters said the government
has not done enough to counter the
Indian project.
Police said at least 30 were detained.
Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali
summoned Indian ambassador Vinay
Mohan Kwatra to hand over a protest
note over the road, Foreign Ministry
spokesman Bharat Raj Poudyal said.
Nepal last Saturday condemned In-
dia’s “unilateral act” that “runs against
the understanding reached between
the two countries... that a solution
to boundary issues would be sought
through negotiations.”
In response, an Indian Foreign Minis-
try spokesman said the contested road
“lies completely within the territory
of India”.
Nepal has a series of boundary
niggles with its giant neighbours, India
and China.
Nepal protested to both in 2015
when they issued a statement list-
ing the Lipu Lekh pass as a bilateral
trade route.
Kathmandu also claims the Kala-
pani region, which adjoins Lipu Lekh,
although Indian troops have been de-
ployed there since India and China
fought a border war in 1962.
Last year India published a map that
showed Kalapani within its borders, a
move protested by Nepal.
