Teknologi Brunei (UTB) yesterday to continue

its efforts towards becoming a university that

can truly contribute to the development of

knowledge, as well as solving contemporary

issues through research.

In a titah delivered during an unscheduled

visit totheuniversity,HisMajestysaid, “In2008,

Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) was upgraded

to UTB. It has undergone extraordinary

developments, including the expansion of

its academic programme portfolio and the

establishment of strategic collaborations with

industries and universities.”

His Majesty highlighted the research

efforts being conducted by UTB, including

core research into oil and gas, green energy

and water, which are important to Brunei.

Car sales in the Sultanate were up by 6.6

per cent in the •irst 11 months of January-

November 2019, according to statistics from

the ASEAN Automotive Federation.

Around 10,949 cars were sold from

January-November 2019, compared to 10,271

units within the period in 2018. August, by far,

recorded the highest percentage increase

with 19.8 per cent, compared to the same

period in 2018.

This was followed by January with 17.7

per cent or 1,053 units sold, and November

16.3 per cent, compared to the same month

in 2018.

During the period, a total of 3,147,822

vehicles were sold in the ASEAN region,

which is a three per cent decline from what

was seen in 2018, where 3,234,560 units

were recorded.

Indonesia contributed the bulk of the

•igure with 940,362 units delivered – the

result is 12 per cent less than the 1,063,445

units recorded during the same period

in 2018.

Coming in second place was Thailand

with 918,267 units, which is only marginally

less (-1 per cent) than in 2018 (928,158 units),

while Malaysia occupied the third spot with

549,445 units, or 0.2 per cent down from the

same period the year prior.

In terms of percentage increase,

Myanmar recorded the highest with a 25.4

per cent rise, followed by Vietnam with a

13.6 per cent increase.

Only eight of the 10 ASEAN member

countries – Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia,

Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore,

Thailand and Vietnam – are accounted for,

with Cambodia and Laos not included.

have been reported in Malaysia, bringing

the total of positive cases to seven.

Travel enthusiast Najmun Nahar is impressed

with life in the Sultanate, describing it as

peaceful, rich in natural biodiversity and •illed

with friendly people.

The Bangladeshi-Swede, who has already

travelled to 140 countries, told the

Bulletin

that

she prayed for world peace and prosperity

while at the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque in

Bandar Seri Begawan. “I felt like crying inside

the mosque,” she said.

“I am also a peace runner, and have

received a Peace Torch Award in the United

States (US). Mankind should not •ight with

each other. I also inspire children not to drop

out of school, and I tell them they can do it if

they have goals.”
